Not every worthwhile set in this city needs a booking or a door charge. Between an open air summer stage, street performers around the busiest squares, and bars that simply never charged for their live nights in the first place, a genuinely good evening of music is often free or close to it.

None of it is hidden exactly, but none of it is heavily signposted either. Knowing roughly where to look does most of the work, and the reward for looking is often better than anything you would have booked in advance.

Amsterdam's best known free music tradition happens outdoors, in the park's own open air theatre through the summer months.
