Escort Jordaan:narrow streets,low lights

The Jordaan was built for workers and newcomers. Now it is one of the most sought-after corners of Amsterdam, and after dark it still feels like a village.

Tight streets. Hidden courtyards. Brown cafés with the lights turned down. A good part of our roster calls this neighbourhood home.

The lay of the land

The Jordaan runs west of Prinsengracht, from Brouwersgracht in the north down to Leidsegracht in the south. The Westerkerk tower marks its edge, with the Anne Frank House on the canal just below. Inside, many streets carry the names of flowers and trees: Bloemgracht, Rozengracht, Lindengracht, Egelantiersgracht.

Saturday brings the farmers market on the Noordermarkt. Monday brings stalls to Westerstraat. Just north, Haarlemmerstraat and Haarlemmerdijk hold the later bars and restaurants. And the Nine Streets, De 9 Straatjes, stitch the Jordaan to the canal ring with small shops and cafés.

Beyond the north-west corner lies Westerpark, where the old gasworks became a cultural park. On weekends its venues run late, and the walk back into the Jordaan takes ten minutes.

Where visitors sleep here

Big hotels are rare in the Jordaan. What you get instead: canal house hotels with a handful of rooms, apartments above galleries, boutique stays tucked behind old gabled façades. Plenty of them have no lobby at all. Just a door, a code, and a staircase.

That is good for discretion. It also means clear details matter. House number, which bell, which floor. Steep Dutch stairs come with the territory, and she is used to them.

Timing in the Jordaan

Companions who live here can be a few minutes from your door. Still, give the standard hour. Parking is close to impossible, taxis cannot always squeeze down the narrowest lanes, and a street full of bikes at 23:00 slows everyone down. If the car cannot reach you, she walks the last stretch.

Late at night the side streets are dark and very quiet. Leave the door light on, or tell the desk what the building looks like. It saves her walking past.

Booking from elsewhere is easy too. The Jordaan borders Amsterdam Centrum directly, so girls based in the centre arrive just as quickly.

An evening, Jordaan style

Nights here are low-key on purpose. A glass of wine in a brown café. A slow walk along Egelantiersgracht when the bridges are lit. Dinner at a small place where the kitchen closes before the bar does. Then back to wherever you are staying, three streets away.

Sunday night is the local secret. The markets are packed away, the cafés are half empty, and the canals belong to whoever is still out.

No one here dresses to be noticed. The best company for the Jordaan blends in, talks well and does not need a big room to make an impression.

Good fits for that rhythm. Karolina is poised and witty, with a soft spot for architecture walks. Patricia is the romantic, into film noir and old bookshops. Bianka is warm, attentive and serious about wine. The full Jordaan list is below, or open the girls for the rest.

Staying near Museumplein instead? Oud-Zuid is your page. Check the rates before you message.
