The Dom Tower is the landmark, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and visible from almost anywhere in the centre. Below it the Oudegracht cuts through the old town, its wharf cellars turned into restaurants and bars right at the waterline.

West of the centre, Utrecht Centraal connects to the Hoog Catharijne shopping complex and the Jaarbeurs exhibition halls, where trade fairs and conferences run all year. To the south, the Museumkwartier is calmer, with old streets, small squares and a few good late terraces. The Neude, a square in the heart of town, is where a lot of evenings begin.

Two main clusters. Around Centraal and the Jaarbeurs you find large business and conference hotels, practical and close to the trains. In the old centre, near the Dom and the Oudegracht, hotels are smaller, often inside historic buildings, with more atmosphere and much less parking.

East of town, Utrecht Science Park has a few hotels serving the university and hospital crowd. Short-stay apartments in the inner city are common too. All of it works. Just send the full address and any entrance details.

Intercity trains leave Amsterdam Centraal for Utrecht all day, and the direct ride is under 30 minutes. By road the A2 gets there in around 40 minutes when it is clear, but that stretch is one of the busiest in the country at rush hour.

What that means for you: more notice than a booking in town. Travel is added to the usual preparation, so message early, name your hotel, and the desk comes back with a concrete arrival time. Very late at night, when trains thin out, the trip takes more planning. Say so if you are booking after midnight.

Cars are restricted in parts of the old centre. If a taxi has to drop her at the edge, she covers the last few minutes on foot.

Utrecht evenings are easy. Dinner in a wharf cellar on the Oudegracht, a drink on a terrace with the Dom lit up overhead, then back to the hotel. Conference guests at the Jaarbeurs often want the opposite: skip the networking dinner, order room service, and have far better company.

In a student city, Thursday counts as the weekend. The centre gets busy, the bars get loud, and a hotel room a few streets away starts to look like the better plan.
