Start at Oosterpark: ponds, old trees, and a grand museum building on its edge. A few blocks north, the Dappermarkt fills Dapperstraat six days a week. Further out come Park Frankendael, with its old country house and gardens, and the wide green of Flevopark at the eastern end.

Apartment rentals fill the gaps, mostly in the brick blocks around Oosterpark. Send the floor and the bell number. Every street in Oost looks the same at one in the morning.

No companion lists Oost as home, but the district is next door to where several of them do live. De Pijp sits just over the Amstel. The Plantage edge of Centrum is a few minutes away. For most of Oost, the standard hour holds.

IJburg is the exception. It sits further out, reached by a long bridge and a single tram line, so allow extra time. The far end of Science Park late at night is the same story.

Cars move well here. Broad roads like Wibautstraat and the Middenweg carry traffic in and out, and a taxi gets to the door without a fight.

Oost does not put on a show for visitors. The good nights are local ones. Dinner at a neighbourhood place near the park. A beer at the brewery bar in the shadow of the windmill. A concert on the IJ, then a walk home along the docks with the water black and flat.

Summer evenings run long on the IJburg beach and the dock edges. Winter is small bars and steamed-up windows.
